Retail Enterprise Suite™ adds new modules for WEEE

The WEEE (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive is coming into statute within the European Union, initially in Ireland, and Episys has developed a specialized module for Retail Enterprise Suite™ to enable Retailers to produce WEEE compliant labeling.
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) aims to minimize the impacts of electrical and electronic equipment on the environment both during its lifetime and at the end of its life, when it becomes waste. It applies to a huge spectrum of products.
The directive sets criteria for the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of waste electrical and electronic equipment. It makes producers responsible for financing most of these activities (producer responsibility) and householders are to be able to return old products for disposal without charge.
The recent introduction of the WEEE regulations in Ireland mandate a number of changes that must be made to any label associated with a product that has been allocated a WEEE category. Each label should now display two extra price points, the PRF (Producer Recycling Fund) value, and the price net of the PRF value.
To enable these changes Episys have developed a module for Retail Enterprise Suite™™ that enables:
- Products to be allocated to a WEEE sub category.
- Each WEEE sub category has a PRF value associated to it, so the PRF for category 1.0 may have a value of €1.50. This would mean that all products allocated a WEEE sub category of 1.0, would attract a PRF value of €1.50.
- Details from the WEEE sub category can then be used on the product labels to automatically produce the additional information required to meet the directive.
- As well as supporting the generation of the labeling there are tools to maintain both the Product data and the WEEE subcategory data. Specifically:
- Products can be reallocated to an existing sub category or a new sub category (this is expected to happen, albeit infrequently).
- The PRF values for a sub category can change.
- The number of sub categories can change.
Country of Origin
Within the European Union there is a legal requirement for certain products to have the country of origin displayed prominently on the labels.
Within the European Union there is a legal requirement for certain products to have the country of origin displayed prominently on the labels.
This can be a problem for certain retailers, such as supermarkets, where they are sourcing a product from different countries that could end up in the same store location, for example, loose potatoes.
The Country of Origin module enables multiple variants of the same label to be generated thus solving this issue and caters for different varieties and different classes.
The Country of Origin module is part of the module set making up the Buyer's Workbench within Retail Enterprise Suite™. The Buyer's Workbench has been designed to allow merchants to manage all aspects of sign creation from a single workbench. Through this integrated interface, the buyer is able to manage both custom and automatic sign associations, to change product content and to preview both events and signs for proofing and approval.
